American writer and activist, Amanda Gorman, made history on January 20, 2021 as the youngest poet to ever perform at a presidential inauguration. She stole the show by reciting her own poem, The Hill We Climb, to a total of 200 guests at the event and a whole lot more watching from their homes. Moreover, Amanda was praised by many for her way with words and confidence in delivery. Despite Amanda’s immense popularity since reciting The Hill We Climb, not much is known about the young role model. That’s why we took it upon ourselves to do some digging and learn more about the (possible) president of 2036.
#1: She graduated cum laude from Harvard College with a BA in Sociology
On May 29, 2020, Amanda Gorman graduated from Harvard University. Due to the pandemic, she was not able to have a real ceremony. Instead, she had a virtual graduation from the comforts of her own home.
#2: She is sponsored by Prada
If you were stunned by Amanda’s bright yellow coat during her speech, then you have Prada to thank for that. The young poet has kept a close relationship with the brand for quite some time now. She has been seen wearing the brand for other events and has even joined them for talks on sustainability.
#3: She’s a fan girl
Amanda Gorman is a relatable queen! During the inauguration, she was able to take multiple photos with her favorite US Presidents and a few celebrities. She captions her photos with Michelle and Barack Obama with, “I am deceased.” She even shares a fan girl moment when she finds out she was seated beside Jennifer Lopez.
#4: She doesn’t have an appendix
Earlier in 2019, Amanda got her appendix removed in UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center. She was diagnosed with appendicitis and went through a speedy surgery. She writes on her Instagram, “Who needs an appendix when you have friends and family?” Amen, Amanda.
#5: She wants to run for president
In her poem, Amanda says, “We, the successors of a country and a time where a skinny Black girl descended from slaves and raised by a single mother can dream of becoming president, only to find herself reciting for one.” The 23 year old poet has admitted in several other occasions that she hopes of one day being the president of the United States of America in 2036.
