GO WITH THE FLOW

Living in a tropical country like ours with the best beaches in the world, one can truly miss the blue waters and the sand beneath our feet when in quarantine. Especially, when it seems like just a few months ago, we were all hopping into our vans and setting straight to La Union to surf the waves and enjoy the company of friends. However, with the pandemic not going anywhere anytime soon, one workout that can recreate the duality of calmness and athleticism surfing can bring is Core and Fluidity Training with a use of a balance board.

We talked to Frances Nabor Abesamis, Founder of Balbo, a Filipino-made fitness line known to be ultimate surf-yoga-sports and fitness partner on the benefits of this type of training. Their philosophy to exercise has always been about finding your center and making you enjoy it. All you need is their balance board sets that includes the deck, roller and a mat. It’s effective and moveable. Many who already do this type of exercise at home prefer to do it in the garden for a fresh reminder of the outdoors. It’s also safe, beginner-friendly and even kids can learn it as well. Abesamis also shares that if you’re a beginner, have a wall to lean on and start with basic exercises such as Finding and Maintaining Center & Breathing exercises. “This works as an active meditation while simultaneously working on the core,” she says. She also emphasizes on the benefits of working out your core because not only is it to improve an athlete’s performance, but it will help in life’s everyday tasks. “Core is the fundamental supporter for every lift, pull, and exercise. It is engaged in any basic daily activity we do.”

OWN YOUR PACE

The evolution of home fitness during the quarantine also proved that exercise can be done anywhere and at any time, which for celebrity fitness trainer Kat Garcia was always the case. Her no excuse workout and training guides, are formulated specifically for stay-at-home moms to teach them on how to make your home as a training ground. Not afraid to break a sweat, Garcia tells us that HIIT exercises or circuit training is a great workout because of the variation of movements that utilizes body weight in a short amount of time.

HIIT and circuit training can be daunting to try out since it’s a high intensity interval training, but Garcia says that there’s nothing to be afraid of. Her main tip is to know your fitness level by consulting an online coach so you can start on your own pace. “There is no need to rush and exaggerate or copy everything you see. Patience is key and will be your ticket to achieving goals safely,” she says. The basic exercises she recommends when you’re just beginning in high-intensity workouts is to do squats and push-ups. Both are multi-joints movements that utilizes big muscle groups to prepare you for heart pumping movements.

GET YOUR GROOVE ON

It’s always good to dance out our frustrations and stress. So, it only makes sense that it’s makes for a great work-out that almost anybody can do. With the rise of online platform TikTok over the quarantine, many found solace in moving to the beat. Tik Rosquillo, a fitness instructor and dancer by blood and sweat, teaches hip-hop workout classes in Nude Floor and now also online. He says that dance workouts are a great aerobic activity for cardiovascular endurance and its more accessible to many. “It’s dance! It doesn’t matter whether you’re good or not, if you want to have a great time with the music and move, dance workouts are always around the corner,” he expresses.

If you’re one who finds exercising quite a task to look forward too, then dance workouts may work. There is less thinking involved and with the help of the adrenaline from the music and the beat, it will naturally drive you to move. The main benefit of dance workouts is that it gives you greater awareness of your body and teaches you how to control your breathing in each movement. Best for warmup and a good cardio day, Rosquillo recommends hip-hop dance to the beginners. “The music is naturally grounded and bounce-centric so try bouncing up and down, side to side, front and back while you listen to the music,” he says and if you need any song recommendations, beats from the ‘90s are perfect for it.
