One of my fondest memories as a child was when my mother brought me to Ongpin in Chinatown during Chinese New Year. We visited a traditional store where she bought me a customized lucky bracelet for the year. I wore the bracelet everyday till it broke. Little did I know, all those instances from the creation to the destruction of the bracelet had a meaning to it. As I’ve gotten older, I have become more curious about the mysteries of horoscopes and luck. After consulting with experts and a few aunties, I’m here to impart my knowledge on all things swerte. But, before we get to the knitty gritty of prosperous practices, let’s talk about charms. Lucky charms to be exact (and we’re not talking about the cereal).
Good luck charms
After going through a horrific year, we all have one question on our minds: Will this year be better? And if it’s not, how can I make it better? This is where good luck charms come in. Think of these pendants as your protectors from the misfortunes of the year ahead. More so, these lucky charms could help boost your wealth, health, and relationships. So, how do you pick one? Well, technically you don’t.
Picking out a lucky charm
According to my Chinese aunties, you have two choices: purchase a general lucky bracelet or get a customized one in Ongpin. The latter, as the name precedes it, provides general luck for the year of the metal ox. On the other hand, the former attracts you to all the elements you lack this year.
General Lucky Charm
We’ve all passed by a Chinese charm stall at least a couple times in our lifetime. The well-lit and predominantly red stalls are pretty hard to miss. Usually, the bracelets that you see at these stalls are considered the general lucky charms. They attract different types of luck, but are worn for specific reasons. You can pick out any of these bracelets to counter any misfortunes you have in certain aspects of your life.
Personalized Lucky Charm
Now, these lucky charms really do the trick. They’re highly recommended by traditionalists. Personalized lucky charms are studied and handmade to tailor fit the needs of the bearer. Supposedly, every year you’re supposed to restring your personalized bracelet. Meaning, whichever charms worked for you last year may not work for you this year.
The good thing is there will be some charms you can reuse from your old bracelet. When you visit a traditional Chinese store, they will ask you for your birthday, birth time, and other details to pinpoint exactly which charms you need.
Important reminder: You should not let anyone touch your charms. The luck from the ritual of the charms will be taken away if anyone else aside from you touches them. In the case that someone does touch them, you’ll have to bring it back so they can perform a ritual again.
