Set in a 50,000-seat empty concert venue in Paris, the pre-recorded digital show starts with organized chaos in the mazelike upper soundstage as models rush in time for the curtain call. As the spotlight hits on the first look and Robert Hood’s original score of minimal techno starts, Matthew M. Williams finally debuts his signature mark for Givenchy with a stomping beat.

“Ultimately, fashion for us is a way of being, feeling and connecting rather than a game to be played. It’s almost like monumentalising the everyday, filling it with emotion – like music you can wear,” says William in the press release.

Embedding his own subversive style to the savoir-flair of Givenchy’s black-clad elegance, Williams is able to exaggerate today’s youthful aesthetic in the simplest way possible. The oversized outerwear, harness bras, faux-fur streetwear, combined with classic leather and sharp tailoring, ultimately creates a collection that is futuristic at the same relevant.

Techno Drift

Meet Meadow Walker, the daughter of the late The Fast and the Furious star Paul Walker who makes her runway debut with the French fashion house. Picturesque of what is effortlessly cool, she sports her trademark raven dip-dyed platinum bob and wears a tailor black suit over a sheer top with a black Cuban chain that wraps around her neckline.

Like what the cool kids in the VIP lounge of nightclubs would be wearing, sheer dresses and capes decorated in tassels mirrored the show’s techno soundtrack. Most were in black and creams that dominated the runway, but a few pops of colors were also seen through a lavender form-fitting dress and a black-orange embellished evening number.

Micro-Macro

Resonating the current times, comfort and protection came with a sense of discipline in the Givenchy fall-winter silhouette. A sculptural quality was seen from the outerwear to the suits which pay homage to the tailoring traditions of the fashion house’s atelier. But what’s impressively new is William’s affinity with material experimentation as seen on Bella Hadid with a braided turtleneck blouse with silver hardware. Others were in forms of dresses, a stunning white-on-white look and a front zipped dress in leather and fur with braided knit on the sides – which proves that you can still show a sliver of skin despite the colder weather.

New-Age Accessories

A former creative director to Lady Gaga, it wasn’t a surprise that the clear standouts of the show were the accessories. From the furry mittens, cat-eared masks, crown headpieces, and harness bras over “G”- clad sheer bodysuits, it all provides a sense of dramatic armor. Williams’ signature motif of metal hardware also continues, featured in supersized monogrammed chains, locks on the 4G bag, and leather cantine necklaces because as the new generation, we all know we value a drink on the go. Last but not least, the hoof-like marshmallow sole pairs that both women and men donned in shades of red, purple, white, and black.

Cool, aggressive and rebellious, watch Williams’ bring out an innate modern edge in the Givenchy Fall-Winter ’21 collection below:
