After being cancelled last year due to the pandemic, The Met Gala is coming back stronger than ever.
Officially, the Met Gala is a fundraising event for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. It’s also fashion’s biggest night out, with A-listers from fashion, movie, and music coming together in their haute-couture best. After being cancelled in 2020 for the first time in years, The Met Gala has just announced that its back—and its happening in two parts.
The first gala will take place on September 13, and the second will be happening in May 2022. As per tradition, these dates will be coinciding with the two-part exhibition that will be shown in the museum. With this year’s theme focusing on American Fashion; the first part, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” will be opened to the public on September 18, and the second part, “In America: The Anthology of Fashion,” will be accessible to the public starting May 5, 2022. Both exhibits will remain open until September 5, 2022, according to Vogue.
In light of the coronavirus pandemic, this announcement signals the beginning of people’s lives slowly returning to normal. With more than 100 million people vaccinated and vaccination rollout improving in the US, the Met Gala may be the silver lining the fashion industry needs.
The last Met Gala, with theme “Camp: Notes on Fashion” took place in 2019. Along with Vogue EIC Anna Wintour, hosts included Lady Gaga, Serena Williams, and Harry Styles. While waiting for the (hopefully) jaw-dropping looks celebrities are sure to don at this year’s gala, relive and reminisce your favorite Met Gala looks here.
