Hail to the new queen of the universe and Mexico’s pride, Andrea Meza.
Here’s to Mexico’s third Miss Universe crown. The 26-year-old, Andrea Meza, won over 73 other contestants in the 69th edition of the beauty pageant. Andrea Meza was one of the favorites among pageant experts so it’s no surprise that she took home the crown.
She said in the post-pageant interview that she’s honored to have been selected among 73 other women. For her, “It is a dream come true to wear the Miss Universe crown, and I hope to serve the world through my advocacy for equality in the year to come and beyond.” Despite the divide among the fans of the pageant, here are the reasons why Andrea Meza deserves the title.
Her Authenticity
Here’s what Miss Universe 1997 and juror Brooke Lee said in an interview on what they are looking for in the next Miss Universe, “These are the kinds of insights they want us to look for, as they’re looking for someone who’s not looking to win. They’re looking for someone who’s living a life and that life shines through on the stage – and that the pageant will help her elevate those messages. That’s what they’re looking for – authenticity!” There’s no doubt that Andrea impressed the judges with her realistic and straight to the point answer in the Q&A round. The question goes:
If you were the leader of your country, how would you have handled the COVID-19 pandemic?
To which Andrea answered, “I believe there is no perfect way to handle this hard situation such as COVID-19, but I believe what I would have done is to create the lockdown even before everything was that big, because we lost so many lives and we cannot afford that. We have to take care of our people, that’s why I would’ve taken care of them since the beginning.”
Here’s a look back on her answer:
A Powerful Woman In Tech
Andrea has a degree in software engineering. She knows how isolating it is for women to be in a male-dominated degree and field such as technology. No wonder why she’s an advocate of gender equality. Talk about having a “queen behavior.”
She’s Against Gender Inequality And Abuse
Even before joining Miss Universe, she was already an activist for women’s rights and inclusion. In fact, she currently works with the Municipal Institute for Women, an organization that aims to end gender violence.
Andrea wants to use her reign as Miss Universe to advocate for women’s rights and fight against gender-based violence.
Gets Real With Beauty Standards
In her 30 second final word, she made it clear that beauty standards should evolve with the times. Even in a short time, her words are powerful and relatable. She said, “We live in a society that more and more is more than advanced, and as we advance as a society, we’ve also advanced with stereotypes. Nowadays, beauty isn’t only the way we look. For me, beauty radiates not only in our spirit, but in our hearts and the way that we conduct ourselves. Never permit anyone to tell you that you’re not valuable.”
Here’s a clip of her final word:
Also An Animal Welfare Advocate
Additionally, according to Miss Universe website, she also turned vegan because she was concerned for the well-being of the world and animals. There is surely not a single being will be left behind for our new Miss Universe queen.
