Missed out on Herbal Essences’ exclusive virtual tour? We share everything we learned about the secrets behind plant-powered care.
The past year has rooted a lot of people into the realms of nature, self-care, and attention to beauty. Interiors saw a rise in the potted plant population, and even fashion trends are turning more towards earth tones, away from the flashy glamour of highly saturated colors. People find their own ways to connect with nature amid quarantines and extended home stays. But since 2018, nature has always remained at the core of Herbal Essences through their partnership with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (RBG Kew).
This marriage of science and beauty brings out the best of both parties: RBG Kew’s unique botanical expertise, and P&G’s leading consumer understanding and formulation science. Now, they’re bringing this partnership to the next level by sharing the secrets behind plant-powered care through a virtual tour of RBG Kew.

Being a global sanctuary of plant research and conservation, there was a lot to see and learn from the over 130 hectares of land hosting and a worldwide collection of plants, some of which are endangered or extinct in the wild. Here are a few of the most important insights we learned throughout the event:
The location is massive and truly breathtaking
Touring over 130 hectares of the RBG Kew location in one sitting is close to impossible. From various labs, parks, sites, and installations, the place is just astounding. However, featured in the event were a couple of the most vital ones for Herbal Essences hair care.
Professor Monique Simmonds, Deputy Director of Science and Director of the Commercial Innovation Unit at RBG Kew, started the tour by taking a moment to showcase the Herbarium–the heart of Kew due to its taxonomic importance. It’s a multi-storey area filled with cabinets and drawers wherever you look. Stored there are over 7 million plant specimens, dried and placed on sheets of paper, which they use for comparing plants from different locations and generations.
Brie Langley, Botanical Horticulturist at RBG Kew, then directed the tour of the famed Temperate House, an iron and glass cathedral-like structure recognized as the largest functioning Victorian glass house in the whole world. This architectural wonder houses 10,000 plant species, 250 of which are considered to be rare. The summer sun was shining through the window panes, and the chirping birds gave this leg of the tour a relaxing feel.
You can take a part of RBG Kew home
Experiencing the full plant expertise of RBG Kew may be out of our hands given its scope and almost other-worldly location. However, through their partnership with Herbal Essences, you can experience plant power at the comfort of your home. Having the Herbal Essences bio:renew line of shampoos and conditioners in your shower is like taking a piece of RBG Kew with you. It says so right on their new packaging: “Real Botanicals” alongside the Kew stamp of endorsement.
With a refreshed design, the Herbal Essences bio:renew line improves on transparency and build. With packaging made from 25% recycled plastic, they keep their commitment to being nature-first. Illustrations of the main ingredients fill the front design, and descriptions of the formulation are listed on the back. Also, touted loud and proud on the back is their “What’s Not Added” list and their cruelty-free commitment that double-downs on product safety.
They not only show, but educate people about the plants they care for
The tour was not all sights and sounds. Learning about the power of plant science goes back to discussing the stories of the plants themselves. They are responsible for clean beauty in every Herbal Essences bottle, after all. Back at the Temperate House, Langley took us through some of the notable species in the house, and focused on a few noteworthy names important in hair care.
The House is divided into various areas based on the different world regions, such as South Africa and Asia. Connecting the various spaces are hallways lined with closely-monitored potted plants. One in particular that Langley focused on was Simmondsia chinensis, commonly known as Jojoba or Goatnut. This works wonders for preventing hair loss and scalp psoriasis.
Similarly, Argan Oil derived from the Argan fruit kernel functions the same way by deeply moisturising and nourishing tresses and restores lost sheen in hair. This is found in the Argan Oil of Morrocco variant of Herbal Essences, crafted for damaged hair to restore its smooth texture, making it soft and supple while leaving it smelling fresh through citruses, vanilla, and a touch of exotic spice.
Langley ended the Temperate House tour at the Asian section as she placed focus on the benefits of citrus and fruit components. This dense section of the House was a mix of the familiars such as lemons, and intriguing fruits like the Imperial Lemon that became widespread during the 70s. Herbal Essences also incorporates unique ingredients for hair care, such as White Strawberry and Sweet Mint for added volume and shine through their silicon-free formula, reinvigorating your hair’s life.
Since 2018, RBG Kew and Herbal Essences have created a bond in the name of having the benefits of real botanicals for your hair in every shower. By maintaining a level of quality in ingredients for healthy hair that’s professionally-backed, as well as refreshing its look to keep it nature-first and prioritize transparency, Herbal Essences now takes their next step into a future of clean beauty for all.
