In case you missed it: Jess Wilson and her longtime boyfriend Moritz Gastl got married last weekend! For the ceremony, she opted for a custom Filipiniana with a detachable skirt by Vania Romoff.
The couple finally tied the knot after having to delay it twice due to the pandemic. Held in Coron, Palawan, the civil wedding ceremony was everything a dream wedding could be. And, what dream wedding exists without the bride’s dream wedding dress? Probably one of the most awaited moments of every wedding ceremony, the groom and all the guests (and of course, on-lookers) patiently wait until the bride walks down the aisle to have a first look. And with Jess Wilson, it was definitely worth the wait.
Designed by Vania Romoff, Jess Wilson’s wedding dress was chic and dreamy. The custom Filipiniana dress featured terno sleeves with fringes at the bottom, and was made with intricate lace details that gave it a more traditional look. What makes the dress even better was its detachable column skirt—perfect for Wilson’s beach wedding and reception. According to Vania Romoff’s Instagram post, the dress is “an ode to the magical fringe terno,” and was inspired by a Filipiniana her grandmother designed in the 60s.
While most brides tend to go for ball gowns, Jess Wilson is among those who decided to go against the “norm” and opt for a more functional and practical dress—something that can be stored in our wardrobes and reused for a future event, if needed. But, she’s not alone. Here are some celebrities who opted for non-traditional dresses for their big day:
Keira Knightley
On top of the list is Hollywood actress Keira Knightley. She tied the knot with James Righton in 2013. While everyone expected something extravagant from the A-list celebrity, she instead opted for a strapless Chanel mini dress. The best part? It was not her first time wearing it! She wore the dress to a pre-BAFTAs dinner in 2008. In 2013, she once again recycled her wedding dress to attend the SeriousFun London Gala. Talk about versatile!
Lily Allen
With a non-traditional wedding comes a non-traditional wedding dress. Singer Lily Allen married actor David Harbour in 2020. The couple opted for a Las Vegas wedding, officiated by an Elvis Presley impersonator. For the special occasion, Lily Allen wore a mini dress from Dior, with a slim white belt. She completed her wedding day look with a veil and black heels.
Olivia Palermo
Fashion influencer Olivia Palermo also wore a non-traditional wedding dress for her ceremony in 2019. Instead of wearing a dress, Olivia Palermo wore a three-piece ensemble to create her look. She wore a Carolina Herrera cashmere sweater, and paired it with some silk faille shorts. The whole ensemble was completed with a skirt overlay that she wore over her shorts.
Sophie Turner
Just like Lily Allen, Sophie Turner also got married in Vegas—the first time, anyway. For her Las Vegas wedding to husband Joe Jonas, Sophie Turner donned a white silk jumpsuit designed by Bevza. She matched her simple outfit with a pair of gold heels, a cropped veil, and matching sunnies with Joe Jonas.
