Everyone is going copper! Local and international celebrities are going red for the season. Should you do too?

It all started with Anya Taylor Joy in the Queen’s Gambit. The rising actress sported copper hair for the entirety of the show. After much success, Queen’s Gambit was not only praised for its interesting plot, but also for the striking fashion and beauty looks that spanned several years. One of the most influential looks in the show, is definitely Beth Harmon’s (Anya Taylor Joy) signature copper hair. Many celebrities used her as an inspiration for their current hair color.
The list includes: KC Concepcion, Gigi Hadid, Rihanna, and Dua Lipa (for a while). Since we’re also starting to fall in love with the trend, we’ve decided to tap top hair colorist, Jef Fontane of The Color Bar and MEGA Fashion Awards Hairstylist to Watch, Mycke Arcano, for a quick chat about going copper. Here’s what they have to say.
MEGA: Is red hair hard to achieve for Filipinos?
Jef Fontane: Copper is not hard to achieve. If your hair is virgin or colored in a salon but not super dark, then this copper color is achievable.
Mycke Arcano: Not really, but in order to achieve red tones on black Asian hair it takes hours of bleach processing and toning. Although, there are now ways to have darker red tones, rather than the bright red tones.
M: What do you advise Filipinos doing who want to go red?
JF: This color is not for all Filipinas; it complements fair skin—not so much morena skin. Although if you have morena skin and you want to try out copper hair, I would suggest highlights, ombre, or balayage placements, but not full head. More like accents only.
MA: Coloring your hair and changing your look shouldn’t be a problem. Give it a go, but pick a shade of red that will compliment your skin tone. You can ask your local hairdresser for an exact tone that would suit you best. I really believe in exploring with colors and styles. But, for Filipinos on the morena or warmer skin color; a deeper mix of coffee brown with red
M: How do you maintain red hair?
JF: Maintenance for this color is just like any other color. Start by using a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, then if you want to keep its vibrancy I would recommend using a tinted shampoo. Particularly, Keracolor Color & Conditioner in Copper.
MA: Any hair color needs a monthly visit to the salon. But, there are toning shampoos that are available in the market that can help in making red tones on your hair vibrant.
M: Why do you think red is making a comeback?
JF: Copper color is making a comeback because the US is heading to the summer months and during summer they go for lighter hair color. Another reason is the show Queen’s Gambit.
MA: I think red is an ever iconic hair color. After several lockdowns, salons are slowly opening up, so us Filipinos are down to change our looks.
