We’ve all seen the snaking lines and the carts creaking under the weight of hardcovers. The Big Bad Wolf book sale is a hotly anticipated event for many Filipinos. This year, spurred by the pandemic and strict restrictions, Big Bad Wolf came back, but this time for an eight-day online sale. Armed with offers of deep discounts (some books are being sold for P10) and free shipping, founders Andrew Yap and Jacqueline Ng were hoping that the fervid Filipino book lovers, who would set record-breaking numbers before, would come through. Almost 80,000 people pre-registered for the event, eager to get first dibs among the over 66,000 titles available in the massive Big Bad Wolf warehouse.

“The first day itself it was like three times more than what we expected,” says Jacqueline Ng, co-founder of Big Bad Wolf. She cites how in other events, the influx of people were usually at three to four thousand in one go. The Philippines, she says, usually numbers around ten thousand. Ng also shares how unique the Filipino market is, citing how in the other countries in Southeast Asia, children’s books make up about 75% of the sales, while in the Philippines, it’s divided evenly among fiction and non-fiction book sales, showing a more mature reading market. This audience profile and the enthusiastic response to Big Bad Wolf prompted Yap and Ng to want to grow their base of operations.

“What we really want to do is have physical operations in the Philippine rather than working out of our home country of Malaysia,” says Yap, Big Bad Wolf’s co-founder and managing director. “If we have more events, a good online stream, it’s more viable for us to have a warehouse in the Philippines.” While the pandemic may have thrown a wrench in their immediate plans, the response to the online sale sees a brighter future for Big Bad Wolf in the Philippines. Yap and Ng see a hybrid model coming out, with both online and in-person sales happening.

“We are a mission-based company, so as we more we grow, we can do more for the people, we can bring the prices even lower, have better promotions,” says Yap. “We always give back to our customers.”

If you haven’t already, head to the Big Bad Wolf website to register for free and start shopping for books. Free shipping starts at P2,900, but Yap and Ng also recommend being on the lookout for promotions and flash sales. “Give yourself time,” says Yap with chuckle, when asked how to navigate the two million books available in the sale. Yes, take your time, but not too much too. Blink and your precious copy may be already sold out.
