The sequel to Erik Matti’s acclaimed 2013 film On The Job has stunned the 78th Venice Film Festival with numerous acclaims, minutes-long standing ovation, and the Philippines’ first Volpi Cup win.
Inspired by true events, On The Job: The Missing 8 films follow a group of syndicates that employ convicted criminals Tatang (Joel Torre), Daniel (Gerald Anderson), and Roman (Dennis Trillo) to perform political assassinations.
The film has a star-studded cast including Joey Marquez, Piolo Pascual, John Arcilla, and Christopher De Leon.
With the themes of power and disinformation, the films shed the spotlight on how fake news and government corruption easily muddles the idea of public information.
With its awe-inspiring story serving as one of Matti’s best projects, the first full-show of the crime thriller was met with a five-minute standing ovation from the
Venice Film Festival crowd.With his powerful portrayal of journalist Sisoy Salas, John Arcilla also nabbed the coveted the Coppa Volpi for Best Actor, a prestigious award that’s been given to the likes of Brad Pitt, Joaquin Pheonix and Ben Affleck.
The Coppa Volpi for Best Actress was meanwhile given to Penelope Cruz for her performance in Parallel Mothers.
In Arcilla’s acceptance speech given via video call and broadcasted to the crowd, the actor shared “We come from different countries with different languages and cultures, and yet I can feel oneness tonight.
“You understand me, and we understand each other – all because of the arts and cinema. Thank you so much!”
