Patty Ang’s lockdown has had her fair share of pandemic-related struggles, but she also doesn’t discount some of the positive results of staying home

The designer Patty Ang’s success is a testament to the kind of woman she is: generous, driven, and resilient. She’s also vibrant—even through a screen. She exudes a palpable zest for life, travel, and discovery. It makes sense, then, that her namesake label’s designs are also zesty, embracing the feminine and frill. Case in point: her signature pieces are decadent feather-trimmed dresses in classic silhouettes, meant to make women feel glamorous and beautiful.
Hit Reset
Now that the pandemic allowed her to slow down a bit, she says, “The pause was also a blessing to rethink the branding and to rest our minds, body, and soul as creatives,” she says with a laugh, recalling how she used to tease her staff that they don’t even let her have lunch breaks. “The hours in a day are not enough. Kulang.” She’s too busy and plugged in, actually, that to her, long-haul flights are synonymous with rest. “That’s the only time I could finish a movie!” she shares. “If it’s not work, it’s being a mother, being a wife.”
Even her own wedding planning took a backseat because of her tight schedule. “I wanted to buy a gown because I wanted to feel like a bride and not think about the problems of my gown,” she shares. But three weeks before the wedding, she still didn’t have anything to wear, so she whipped something up, despite having a show just a week before the big day. “We were still beading the day of! I was doing it while I was doing my makeup,” she recalls with a laugh.
