The MEGA Fashion Awards (MFA) has always been a highlight in Philippine fashion’s social calendar. In its past two iterations, the best in the industry walked down the red carpet in their most fashion-forward ensembles, heading to a star-packed ballroom to witness MEGA recognized the season’s most outstanding. But that was when real-life experiences were safe and social distancing wasn’t the norm.
This year the MFA was held virtually, as MEGA wasn’t going to let another year go by without celebrating the fight that local creatives have put up. While the country was left hopeless with the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic, the industry stepped up to help others and provide comfort and light the best way it knew how. Fashion designers created PPEs and masks, makeup artists and hairstylists brought joy by sharing their creativity online, showbiz stars and influential names came together to uplift the Filipino community.
Upon hearing the news of the virtual awards show, guests of designers, A-list stars, models, designers, and creatives were more than happy to get out of their loungewear for the day and dress to the nines for an at-home red carpet moment.
But a first this year, the exclusive awards show was open to the public in real-time. Livestreamed through MEGA’s Facebook page, families and supporters of nominees were able to join in and celebrate along.
Entering the event’s Zoom link, like old friends seeing each other again for the first time. Host Bianca Valerio welcomed guests, as did One Mega Group President Suki Salvador and Editor-in-Chief Peewee Reyes-Isidro. The screen slowly then filled up with recognizable faces and even though all were in different cities and parts of the world, each one was brimming with excitement for what the night holds.
“Post-pandemic, pre-pandemic, MEGA Fashion Awards is there to inspire each creative to wake up and create better,” says President Suki Salvador about the importance of the event.
Hosted by Bianca Valerio, a total of 26 awards were given out this year. From up and coming young creatives who push for innovation to industry stalwarts who kept fueling the flame of fashion, each winner was truly deserving of the award they received.
As the night came to a close and bittersweet goodbyes were exchanged, the local industry that was condensed into one virtual room, was reminded that during the darkest times, the passion of Filipino creatives will only burn brighter.
