Filipina Tennis Star Alex Eala Has Made History With Her Recent Win At The 2021 French Open

After winning her second Grand Slam title at the 2021 French Open, everyone has their eyes on Alex Eala. Here are some things to know about the Filipina tennis star.

After winning her first Grand Slam title at the 2020 Australian Open, it seems Alex Eala only has her eyes on the prize. At only 16 years old, the Filipino tennis star, together with her Russian partner Oksana Selekhmeteva, were hailed the 2021 French Open girls double champions, held in Paris, France. 

Eala and Selekhmeteva beat Maria Bondarenko of Russia and Amarissa Kiataroth of Hungary, 6-0, 7-5, in just 67 minutes in the girls finals. “Sa lahat ng mga Pinoy na nanood, maraming salamat po. It’s actually Independence Day today, so I hope I gave my contribution to the country,” Eala shared after the match.

She is the first Filipina to win two Grand Slam titles

With her recent win, Alex Eala has made history by being the first Filipina to win two Grand Slam titles. She won her first title at the 2020 Australian Open with her partner Priska Madelyn Nugroho. Currently, they are still the defending champions for the title.

Her tennis career started in 2013

While Eala started training for tennis when she was just 4 years old, it was in 2013 that her tennis career took a turn. She topped the 10-under category in the Truflex championship series held in Cebu, and was hailed the champion for the Little Mo International Tournaments of the girls’ 8 and under category, held in the US.

She comes from a family of athletes

It is no surprise to see how passionate Eala is when it comes to her sport, as she comes from a family of athletes. Her mother is Rizza Maniego-Eala, a women’s 100m backstroke bronze medalist at the 1985 Southeast Asian Games. Her sister is also a national swimmer, while her brother plays for the University of the Philippines tennis varsity. Eala also has an older brother who trains for tennis at the Rafa Nadal Academy with her.

After catching the attention of scouts at the 2018 Roland Garros juniors tournament, Eala received a scholarship, together with her brother at the Rafa Nadal Academy. She has been studying at the American International School of Mallorca since September 2018, and now actively trains at the Rafa Nadal Academy, run by tennis superstar Rafa Nadal himself.
