Here’s The Ultimate Guide Into Using Rice Water For Your Hair

This hair care trick is so easy to try and all the ingredients are probably in your kitchen

Among the long list of activities we miss the most during the pandemic is probably our visits to salons. Although businesses are starting to open up again and eager to her professional care, there are still many who are scared to go out. Because of that, people have gotten a lot more creative these days. That’s why many beauty home remedies became viral, and one of these is the rice water hair care trick.

Rice water is the starchy water left over after rice is cooked or left to soak. It’s supposed to make hair smooth, shiny, and help it grow faster. This practice actually dates back to the ancient Heian period in Japan. The secret to the long and beautiful hair of the court ladies during that period was rice water.

In recent months, many beauty vloggers tried the rice water treatment and most of them claim that their hair had gotten longer and smoother. Studies found that inositol, an ingredient found in rice water, can repair damaged hair and can protect hair from future damage. Aside from inositol, rice water contains a lot more vitamins that could also be beneficial like amino acids, B vitamins, vitamin E, and antioxidants. On top of all of that, this beauty trend is so easy to do because all you need is, well, rice and water.

Clean, strain and mix.

In making rice water, you will need one cup of rice and one cup of water. Clean the rice first by mixing the grains with water until you get rid of all dirt or impurities. After that, rinse and strain the rice until the water runs clear. Mix the strained rice into a medium sized bowl with water and stir until the water becomes cloudy.

Store it for fermentation

After straining and mixing, let it sit for at least an hour up to 24 hours to allow fermentation so all of the nutrients can be extracted into the water. Put the rice water in a plastic container and cover it. You can also store it in a small container or jar so you can easily use it.

Let the rice water sit at room temperature for 12 to strictly 24 hours, don’t let it sit beyond that. After that, refrigerate the rice water until you’re ready to use it. Remember to always put it back on the fridge when you’re done. You can keep the rice water in the fridge for about one week.

Application

When it comes to finally applying the rice water on to your hair, there’s no need to change your hair washing schedule. Simply apply it after shampooing and conditioning. Take note that when you apply the rice water, focus in on your scalp then to the rest of your hair.

Rinse your hair

After the application, let it sit for two to five minutes and then rinse with cold water. Make sure to rinse it off thoroughly. Don’t overdo it because the abundance of protein in the water can dry out your hair. For starters, try using the rice water twice a week and monitor how your hair feels. You’re supposed to immediately notice how strong and thick your hair feels with just one try.

Rice water is safe for all hair types, including color-treated hair. Although, you have to be aware of its smell before using it each time. Make sure that it doesn’t smell sour, because if it does then it is time to discard it and make a fresh batch.
