As the 69th Miss Universe ended earlier this morning, the Philippines representative was announced as the 15th candidate to make it to the semi-finals. The 24-year-old Illongga however didn’t make it to the top 10 and the final evening gown segment. Despite this, Mateo still stood out amongst the 74 candidates when she appeared for the final competition, donning on her final Furne One creation.
A closed-necked haltered gown embroidered with Swarovski crystals that trailed down into feathers to symbolize a Phoenix rising from the aftermath of a fire and its ashes, it was an exact representation of Mateo’s Miss Universe journey.
The Dress
World-renowned designer and MEGA first YDC winner, Furne One reveals that the inspiration behind Mateo’s final evening gown is the “Sarimanok,” a mythical bird of the Marano people originating from Mindanao that symbolizes good fortune. It featured a mermaid silhouette to celebrate the beauty of the female form while the fiery orange hue symbolizes joy, happiness, and creativity.
Made with laser-cut fabrics, hyacinth Swarovski crystals, glass beads, and paillettes, the intricately designed bodice represents the heartbeat of the people of Iloilo people and the palpable energy of their festivals.
It was not an easy road for Rabiya Mateo to earn her place in Miss Universe and more so in earning the trust and respect of the Filipino fans, but through it all, she was strong, kind, and self-assured.
“We are still so proud of you @rabiyamateo like a phoenix, on your own pace and time, you will soar high,” says Furne One on his Instagram post. We can’t wait to see what the phenomenal woman does next.
